Transport is one of the biggest costs of living in London. The 18+ Student Oyster photo card gives you 30% off all TfL travel — Tube, bus, Overground, DLR and Elizabeth line. Here is exactly how to get it and how to use it.

What is an Oyster card?

An Oyster card is a reusable smartcard that you tap in and out of TfL (Transport for London) services — including the London Underground (the Tube), buses, the Overground, DLR, Elizabeth line and some National Rail services within London.

You add credit to it (called "topping up") and fares are automatically deducted each time you travel. There is also a daily and weekly cap, so you never pay more than a set amount no matter how much you travel.

Oyster card vs contactless — which should I use?

Most international students ask this first. The short answer: get the 18+ Student Oyster photo card — it is cheaper than either option.

💡If you commute daily between your accommodation and university, the 18+ Student Oyster card pays for itself in the first week. The £7 card fee is a one-off cost — after that, every journey is 30% cheaper.

Who is eligible for the 18+ Student Oyster photo card?

You are eligible if you meet all of the following:

You are aged 18 or over

You are studying at a TfL-approved educational institution in London (almost all universities qualify)

Your course is at least 15 hours per week for at least 14 weeks of the year

You are registered as a full-time student

International students on a UK Student visa qualify — your visa status does not affect your eligibility, only your enrolment status does.

How to get your 18+ Student Oyster photo card — step by step

The entire process is online. Your university must first register with TfL — most have already done so.

Check your university is registered with TfL

Go to tfl.gov.uk/18-plus-student-oyster-photocard and check whether your institution appears in the list. Virtually all London universities are registered — UCL, King's, LSE, SOAS, City, Westminster, Greenwich, Middlesex, ARU London and more.

Apply online via your university's student portal

Most universities handle the application through their student portal or a link they email you during induction. If you cannot find it, go directly to the TfL website and select your institution — TfL will redirect you to your university's verification process.

Upload a passport-style photo

You will need a recent photo (head and shoulders, plain background — the same format as a passport photo). Most universities let you upload a JPEG from your phone. Some Tube stations have photo booths if you need a printed copy, but digital is accepted online.

Pay the £7 card fee

The card costs £7 — a one-off, non-refundable fee. You pay by debit or credit card during the application. This is the only cost — there are no annual renewal fees (the discount is renewed each academic year if you remain enrolled, and TfL notifies you automatically).

Wait for your card to arrive by post

Your card is sent to your registered UK address within 7 to 14 days. Make sure the address you provide is where you will actually be — if you are moving from temporary to permanent accommodation, wait until you have settled before applying.

Once you receive your card, register it online. Registered cards can be cancelled and the remaining balance transferred if your card is lost or stolen. This takes 5 minutes and is strongly recommended.

💡In your first week before your card arrives, use contactless on your phone — Apple Pay or Google Pay — for convenience. Switch to your Student Oyster card as soon as it arrives to start saving 30% on every journey.

How to top up your Oyster card

There are four ways to add credit:

TfL app — the easiest option. Download the TfL Oyster and contactless app and top up with any debit or credit card. Credit appears on your card within 30 minutes.

tfl.gov.uk — log in to your TfL account and top up online. Can also set up auto top-up so your card reloads automatically when balance drops below £5.

Tube station ticket machines — every Tube station has machines that accept card and cash. Top up instantly at the machine.

Convenience shops — most newsagents, Tesco Express and corner shops across London display the Oyster logo and can top up your card with cash.

Recommended: set up auto top-up on the TfL app. You will never be caught with a zero balance and miss your Tube.

Understanding London zones

London is divided into 6 concentric fare zones. Zone 1 is the centre (Oxford Circus, King's Cross, London Bridge). Most universities and accommodation for international students are in Zones 1–3.

There are daily and weekly caps — so once you hit the cap, all further travel within those zones is free for the rest of the day or week. With the 18+ Student Oyster, the cap itself is 30% lower than the standard rate.

What if I am not in London or my university is not listed?

A standard Oyster card (no student discount) is available from any Tube station ticket office or machine for a £5 refundable deposit. It gives you Oyster pricing — which is already cheaper than paper tickets — but without the 30% reduction.

For travel outside London (National Rail, intercity trains), your Oyster card is not valid. Consider the 16–25 Railcard (£35/year or £80 for 3 years, 1/3 off most rail fares in the UK). Full-time students under 26 almost always qualify.

💡The 16–25 Railcard and the 18+ Student Oyster card are separate — you can (and should) have both. Use your Oyster in London, use your Railcard for travel to other UK cities.

Common mistakes to avoid

Not tapping out. Always tap out when you exit the station. If you forget, TfL charges you the maximum fare for that zone. Buses are tap-in only — no need to tap out on buses.

Mixing contactless and Oyster on the same journey. Always use the same payment method for both the tap-in and tap-out, or TfL will charge two incomplete journeys (maximum fare each).

Running out of credit. If your balance is too low to make a journey, the gate will open but TfL will charge you a "touched out with low balance" fee — and block the card until you top up. Set up auto top-up to avoid this.

Paying for your 18+ Student Oyster application through a third-party site. The only legitimate application is through TfL's website and your university portal. The card costs £7 — nothing more.

Not renewing at the start of each academic year. TfL emails you when your Student Oyster discount is about to expire (usually July). If you do not renew, fares revert to standard prices automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my 18+ Student Oyster card on all TfL services?+

Yes — the discount applies on the London Underground (Tube), London Overground, DLR, Elizabeth line, TfL Rail and most bus routes. It does not apply on National Express coaches or intercity National Rail trains outside London.

How long does it take to get the card?+

Once your application is approved by both TfL and your university (usually within 2–5 working days), the card is posted to you and typically arrives within 7–14 days. During peak induction periods (September–October) processing can take slightly longer.

What happens to the £7 fee if I leave university early?+

The £7 card fee is non-refundable. However, any remaining Oyster balance on the card can be refunded if you return the card at a Tube station.

Do I need to renew my Student Oyster card every year?+

The discount is tied to your enrolment. TfL emails you each year (usually in June or July) to renew the discount for the next academic year. The card itself stays the same — you just reconfirm your student status. No new card fee.

I lost my Student Oyster card — what do I do?+

If you registered your card at tfl.gov.uk, you can report it lost and your remaining balance will be transferred to a replacement card. Call TfL on 0343 222 1234 or use the TfL app. There is a £5 replacement fee.

Can I use my Oyster card on buses without topping up?+

No — you must have a positive balance. Buses in London no longer accept cash. Keep at least £1.75 on your card (single bus fare). Auto top-up is strongly recommended.
