The 16-25 Railcard is a discount card issued by the National Rail train operators. It gives you one-third off the price of nearly every train ticket across Great Britain — from London to Edinburgh, Manchester to Brighton, or a quick hop between two local stations.
Despite the name, the card is not limited to people aged 16-25. If you are a full-time student — at any age — you are eligible. This is the rule that matters most for international students who may be 26, 27 or older when they start their course in the UK.
At £30 per year, most students save that amount back on their very first long journey. A standard London–Manchester return can easily cost £120+; with the Railcard you pay around £80.
Yes — unambiguously. There are two ways to qualify, and international students typically meet at least one:
Route A — Age
You are between 16 and 25 years old on the date you buy the Railcard.
Route B — Full-time student
You are enrolled as a full-time student. No age cap. You must provide proof.

Verdict: Go digital unless you have a specific reason not to. It is instant, can never be physically lost, and the app works offline once loaded.
The 16-25 Railcard works on virtually all tickets — Advance, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak, and Anytime fares all receive the 1/3 discount. There is just one restriction to be aware of:
⚠️ Morning peak restriction
On Monday to Friday before 10:00am, a minimum fare of £12 applies for journeys starting in certain areas (mainly London and South East routes). If your discounted fare would come to less than £12, you pay £12 instead. For longer journeys, the 1/3 discount still applies normally — only very short peak trips are affected.
In practice: if you are travelling between cities — even in the morning — you will almost always save the full 1/3. The £12 minimum only bites on very short, cheap journeys during the morning peak.
Tip: Buy Advance tickets online in advance (via the National Rail website or the Trainline app) and apply your Railcard at checkout. Advance fares are already cheaper, then you get another 1/3 off the top.
